13 August, 2010

and then we called 911.

This morning.

was beautiful.

5am smelled like rain and freshly cut grass
and not like "urgh, hit snooze."

and then, Lincoln woke up.

and swallowed a penny.

and life went all crazy pants.

and suddenly I was on my knees in front of him,
praying with all of my soul. . .

PLEASE! not again. PLEASE!

but my face was calm as Heaven itself.
(That gift of calm in crisis is inherent and comes from my mom. . .).

and then he started talking and breathing (and whimpering).

HE WAS TALKING. . .
and BREATHING.

and after a short fiasco with the paramedics and then the ER,
all is well.

and my heart is FILLED with gratitude.
because, I cannot do another gavin ever again.

ever.again.

oh and ps. I'm told that that bubble around the demon penny,
is a fart.

One of these days baby Maria will swallow a penny. They're everywhere. They multiply when we're sleeping. Enzo plays with them like it's the greatest toy ever invented. They drive me crazy with worry.

I'm so glad Lincoln is o.k.

Will he have to poop it out?

Glad everything is okay!!! God Bless!

damaris, yes. :) and he LOVES the thought! So much in fact, that I have to keep reminding him how lucky we are he did not DIE because I'm afraid he thinks it's all so cool and funny that he doesn't remember how terrified he was when it actually happened!

Oh my goodness! I am constantly telling my 8 year old not to leave pennies around for the nearly 19 month old to find and put in his mouth. I am glad that Lincoln is ok! I am sure that it is a scary thought especially if he wasn't breathing for a few minutes.

In another thing. My cousin's wife is expecting in November and was asking about what vaccinations to give and what not too. Which I think is a foolish question about whether to or not but of course everyone has their own choice. But I thought of you and asked her to get her adult pertussis booster and anyone that may be caring for her precious little one to get their boosters too.

Ok, I let Cole play with coins and put them in and out of the piggy bank all the time. He calls it, "Coles cash" and it keeps him occupied for almost an hour. After hearing about Mr. Lincoln, all coins are being placed in the piggy bank and put up HIGH! Thankful he is ok, I can't imagine how scary that must have been for you!!! Love you. Steph

I hope it's not rude to ask...

I just have to wonder how they got it out? Scope?

I'm so happy he's O.K.

anon: they didn't! it will come out in his poop. :)

We used to swallow change once in a while when I was a kid. I swallowed a quarter once when I was pretty young. I had no idea it was dangerous. My mom just watched to make sure it passed. We probably didn't know we should worry. I can really see how something other people might think is small would be really scary after all that you have already experienced.

Was he in pain? I'm sure glad everything turned out alright!

terrifying! i'm the same way when crisis befalls one of my kids-- calm exterior/lose-my-mind-panicky inside. but when it's over, i can't help but shudder for days whenever i think aobut what happened or could have happened.

i'm SO glad he is/you are ok. whew! is your husband back? or still on a trip? i'm hoping he's around to fall apart on if you need it later.

Happy Friday the 13th! My 18-month-old swallowed a whole bottle of air soft gun pellets a few days ago. (This is what happens when Dad babysits.) This morning, about thirty orange pellets rolled out of his diaper when I opened it up to change him. Of course...I would rather have a few dozen small orange balls come out in Jack's poop rather than have to search his diapers for a penny. (Or take a trip to the ER.) I think you win this one.

Heather said...

So...are you going to be looking through his poop till you find it? You should keep it in a jar. haha.

Heather said...

p.s. do you think it'll hurt coming out? Is that an inappropriate question?

Stephanie said...

Oh boy...I hope it's a painless exit!!

I hope to the heaven's you never ever ever have to "do another Gavin".

Stay strong!!

Keep the penny - it's good luck?

I HOPE it hurts him coming out. Serves him right for sticking a penny down his throat. Hopefully if it hurts like crazy, he'll learn his lesson. ;)

Oh, so sorry! My brother swallowed a dime or penny - some sort of change when he was younger and my Mom had to dig through his poop to make sure it passed. Good luck with that. ;)

Oh Lincoln! You are soooo lucky! I think you're probably the only little boy out there who has a picture of one of his farts! Not many things cooler than that.

But no more money in the mouth please, buddy! Don't want to push your luck.

Lve you bunches!

I think it's kinda funny Lincoln swallowed a penny...Lincoln, penny, get it? :) I'm glad everyone's fine now...none of my kids have pulled that, knock on wood.

Michelle used to swallow penny's and they don't come out shiny by the way.

I'm so glad Lincoln is ok! When i was a kid, I swallowed one of those huge plastic rings that you got out of bubble gum machines, took 1/2 bottle of baby aspirin (the orange flavored ones) and at an entire box of x-lax! All at different ages I should say, but kind of makes me wonder about myself back then! After I ate the x-lax, my mother locked me in a room, called the Dr., and I had to sit on the pot and drink hot water with salt. So not cool!

amazing how we mothers can stay calm on the outside- all the while flipping out on the inside :)
so happy everything is okay-
my guy wasn't 2 yet when he "eat nickle" his words. Still in diapers and we never did find the nickle. I'm thinking my sitter really wasn't looking for it. :)
kids= good times good times

Dallin swollowed a penny too.....when he was much younger....it got stuck in his esophagus. It had been in there a few days when he started wheezing....I thought he was getting sick so I took him him, but he didn't wheeze unless he was crying so I pinched him and made him cry so the doc could hear it....then the x-ray came. Then to children's hospital to put him under and they had to use a probe to get it out. I'm just tell you this so that you keep watching him to make sure he poops it out....sometimes they get stuck....although Dallin was younger and tinier then. Good luck.

ps....life is hard!!! I know you already know this.

I had a “penny experience” with my little girl, Jenna. She was 6 weeks when her 2.5 yr old brother put a penny in her mouth and "told her not to swallow it." I was prompted to check on her in time...though her lips were already blue and it was lodged too deep to touch. I am truly blessed. So glad your little Lincoln is OK!

the other year my 11 yr old brother (at the time he was 8) swallowed 7 quarters because my other brother dared him to... go figure. My parents had taken me to the dentist and got the call from one of our neighbors saying the ambulance was taking him to the hospital. long story short, i remember my mom being soooo scared because she wasn't there and wasn't 100% sure what was going on. My brother ended up being okay he threw up 5 quarters and pooped out the other 2. My mom MADE sure that my brothers NEVER dared each other to do stupid things EVER again.

Okay, I am pretty sure that my heart stopped beating when I read this. SO glad he is okay! And that you are too.

Oh, thank God that your boy is okay, pennies do tend to all come out in the end (pun intended). I am also so, so sad to hear about your youngest, that's got to be the most difficult thing a parent ever has to go through. I'm so sorry for your loss. Gavin is in God's arms sleeping peacefully and without illness. And he is happily watching over your family everyday. God Bless you all on this Easter Sunday!
